MEMBERS ONLY CELEBRATION

Welcome
FHM members were greeted by enthusiastic Grand Opening Members who had worked with "sisu" to get the Museum open for July 30. Many disbelievers had said that a job of that magnitude could not be done. But leave it to a dedicated and determined group of Finns and others who would not be dismayed or disenchanted by the huge undertaking.
Many cleaned areas over and over again, since construction dust and detritus seemed to magically appear overnight. One couple cleaned the old refrigerator to "spotless" condition, only to find the next day that it had been declared "terminal" and was headed to the refrigerator graveyard. A new one was purchased. In spite of all the trials, FHM is now proudly open, a testament of Finnish Sisu recognized worldwide.

Members enjoyed themselves

Two things were certain: there was enough food and drink available and the smiles were plentiful.

The 25 Fairport Finnish families presented as part of the first exhibit were certainly interesting and scrutinized by all who passed through.

Museum members share many things in common besides being a Finn. Often it's Fairport that's the topic of discussion.

electricians The work on the Museum in the last few months was hectic and nerve wracking. Many doubters said that "either we were crazy, or just Finns!" (That's an interesting statement.) On Friday evening our electricians (also members) finished up the last light as members were beginning to arrive for the evening's festivities. Our thanks go to Denny and Sam Nelson, our stalwart father and son team of electricians, who did a marvelous job.
Katila
Milly Laituri, John Laituri, and museum founder Linda Katila socialize in FHM's Coffee and gift shoppe on Friday night.
Bell
The Reverend Peter Lillback, President of the Providence Forum and senior pastor of Proclamation Presbyterian Church in Bryn Mawr, PA. Arrangements were made by Elaine Lillback to have the replica, (actual size and weight, and cast by the same foundry as the original bell) to be shown at our grand opening. The bell was rung to the delight of visitors many times.
Kauno The Friday Night Members Only invitational gave opportunity for Fairport Harbor residents and former residents to see one another and talk over old times. Here Heikki Kallio, Virpi Pakkala Buck and Kauno Kallio cheerfully pose for a grand picture.
The Grand Opening has prompted many Finns and those related to Finns to not only join the museum, but also to dig up those precious items to donate to the museum. Those items may hold considerable historical value and would be worthwhile to give to the museum. One recent donation was a complete toolbox containing "hand tools" that built a house in Fairport that still stands. It was a welcome donation. It is on display now with a picture of the house.
