Frank1The Finnish Heritage Museum in Fairport Harbor, Ohio, hosted a very special program on Monday, October 15, 2018 when Frank Eld, a recognized log cabin expert explained the science of log cabin construction.

Eld, a Finlandia Foundation National lecturer of the year (2018-19) had a full house of interested audience as he not only explained the wooden raw materials, but he also demonstrated the techniques behind the unusual and quite "Finnish" log cabin construction.

The log cabin is probably the best known symbol of frontierdom as it provided safety and relative comfort in areas where those qualities were absolutely necessary.

Finns earned a special place in history by introducing Finnish log cabin construction in the New Sweden Colony in 1638 and again in the second wave of migration during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The techniques using specialized tools developed by the Finns produced quality dwellings which have surpassed other log cabin building styles and have withstood the test of time.woodchop3woodchop2

With a museum in Roseberry, Idaho, Eld has researched and documented many existing log cabins in many settlements across the United States. The museum features eight log cabins within a larger group of seventeen other structures.

"You are invited to visit," declared Frank. "My mission is to educate others on our unique Finnish Heritage of log building and encouraging its preservation."

Eld has written one book, Finnish Log Construction--The Art, and is researching a second on this subject.
